Learning or performance support? That\u2019s a poor choice!
The right answer is: both!
Let me share a story:
20 months ago, I had no clue what ChatGPT was.
When I first saw it, I started completely from scratch. It was fun playing with it, but I soon realised I was only scratching the surface.
I wanted to delve deeper, but learning from tweets, LinkedIn posts, and web articles didn’t really elevate my understanding to a level I was comfortable with.
So, I decided to sign up for several courses developed by experts who clearly knew what they were preaching. I invested a hefty amount of time (and money) to learn about AI, from the basics of neural networks and machine learning to prompt engineering.
And it was a revelation!
These courses helped me build a solid knowledge foundation, enhancing my understanding of AI discussions and enabling me to leverage others’ insights to improve my own understanding.
I was finally able to grow at a pace I was happy with!
However, I would never have reached this level by merely searching for information as needed (a.k.a. performance support).
The key takeaway:
1. Performance support doesn’t work well without foundational knowledge.
2. Classic learning alone will also not allow you to reach your full potential.
3. Learning should be a well-balanced diet.
